How to get it right

  1. What do they already have? For someone who knows a lot, give the piece they'd never buy for themselves: a mouth-blown glass, an artisan corkscrew.
  2. What do they drink, and how? Anyone who opens big bottles and takes a while to finish them will love a Coravin. Anyone who hosts dinners: glasses or a decanter.
  3. How much do you want to spend? That's what the three budgets are for.

What I wouldn't give

  • Many-piece kits in a wooden box, with solid-core worms and thermometers that don't work. Better one good piece.
  • Stemless or coloured designer glasses. Very decorative, not much use for enjoying wine.
  • Stones for chilling wine. They work so-so and can scratch the glass.

How to present it

Add a simple note and a specific wine to christen the gift with: the glasses with a bottle for the first toast, the corkscrew with «to open that Ribera you've been saving», the Coravin with a list of three wines to keep open at the same time.

Prices are approximate ranges that change often; always check the current price before buying.
